日本代购-“神秘的な霧の中に消えていくようなエコー” Catalinbreadが伝説的なディスクエコーを再現し、世界的に注目を集めた“Echorec”の開発を始めた頃、同時にオイル缶エコーの再現にもとりかかりました。後にAdinekoと呼ばれることになるこのペダルの開発が始まったのは2012年の夏のことです。本物の音を知るために、いくつものヴィンテージユニットを使用し、来る日も来る日も研究を重ねました。ユニットごとの音色の違いはもちろん、日によって、時には1時間ごとに音が変わるような個体も存在していました。理想の条件に於ける最高のオイル缶エコーのトーン。クールでブライト、同時にダークなエコーサウンド。オイルの揺れがもたらすヴィブラートモジュレーションと、オイル缶エコーの持つ独特の、霧の中に浮遊するような音色。それを、現代のコンパクトペダルとして当然のエコータイムとリピートを十分に確保した上で再現すること。Adinekoは、この全てを実現したディレイペダルです。 Adinekoのケースには、ヴィンテージオイル缶エコーの中にあるオイル缶を思わせるエイジド塗装を施しています。薄く錆が浮いたように見える塗装を施すことで、ヴィンテージエコーマシンの雰囲気までも再現しています。 ※エイジド塗装は1台1台手作業で行っているため、全て違った表情を見せます。ヴィンテージサウンドを再現する新たなペダルを作る時、Catalinbreadでは必ず“古い経験”を尊重、それをさらに広げるように務めています。もちろん、Adinekoも同様です。例えば、経年変化や熱により粘度の変わったオイルが作る独特のダークな音色も、VISCOSITY（粘度）ノブでコントロールすることができます。暖かなエコークオリティを保ったまま、かつてのオイル缶エコーの領域を遥かに越えるディレイタイムをTIMINGノブでコントロール可能。そして、BALANCEノブではオリジナルエコーユニットのデュアルプレイバックヘッドが作った独特なシンコペーションを再現できます。 ●クイックスタート初めてAdinekoを手にしたなら、まずはこのペダルだけで、アンプをクリーンにして音を出してみましょう。Adinekoはオイル缶エコーのトーンを再現しますが、その音色を保ったままオリジナルユニットを超えた領域までを想定して設計されています。 Adinekoでオリジナルオイル缶エコーユニットの操作範囲を再現すると、以下のようなセッティングになります。 TIMING：9〜10時 VISCOSITY：9〜10時 REVERB：自己発振寸前の設定 BLEND：12時 BALANCE：12時オリジナルオイル缶エコーは2タップ（リピート）のみの、ショートディレイしか作ることのできないユニットであることが分かります。しかし、そのディレイタイムと同期するヴィブラート、そして自己発振寸前のリバーブサウンドの霧の中へ消えていく、幽玄で美しいディレイサウンドを実感することができます。もう少しヴィブラートの効いたTel-Ray Deluxe Organトーンが欲しいなら、REVERBを下げ、BLENDを上げます。 ●各コントロールの詳細・BALANCE：オリジナルユニットには、2つのスライドスイッチやロータリースイッチで選択できるショートとロングの2つのエコープレイバックヘッドが搭載されていました。このヘッドは、片方、または両方を選択することができ、2つのヘッドを組み合わせて独特のシンコペーションを作ることもできました。 Adinekoではそれをさらに拡張。自由にバランスを調整できるようにすることで全く新しいリズミックなトーンを作ることも可能となりました。このノブを反時計回りに回せばショートディレイタイムヘッドが、時計回りに回せばロングディレイタイムヘッドが強く、12時の位置ではそれぞれが同じバランスで出力されます。・BLEND：このコントロールは、100％ウェット（エフェクト全体の音）と100％ドライ（インプットシグナル）の範囲でドライとウェットのバランスをコントロールすることができます。オリジナルユニットでは真空管のプリアンプステージが搭載されていましたが、Adinekoのプリアンプステージはそのサウンドを再現するように調整されています。・TIMING：オイル缶エコーは、その殆どが固定式のディレイタイムです。一部のモデルではモーターのスピードを落とすことでディレタイムを切り替えることができましたが、どちらにしてもオイル缶エコーユニットが作ることの出来るディレイタイムは80〜120msと、非常に短いものでした。 Adinekoは、TIMINGノブを調整することで、最大1秒までのディレイタイムを設定することができます。・VISCOSITY：このコントロールを理解するには、オリジナルオイル缶エコーユニットの動作を知っておく必要があります。オイル缶の中にゆっくりと回るメタルディスクがあるとイメージしてみてください。このディスクは、1つ、または2つのプレイバックヘッドが音をピックアップするまでの間、レコードブラシヘッドからの静電負荷を維持します。もし缶が空だったら、ここに静電気が発生してしまうため、缶の中を謎のオイルで満たします。そのオイルはほとんどがUnion Carbide LB-65で、長年、このオイルには発がん性があったとの噂もあります。ともかく、このオイルの役割は空気からの静電気を防止するためのものでした。このオイルの問題は、例えば熱により粘性が低下すると、電荷を維持できません。オイルの粘性が下がり、オイルの揺れが大きくなるほど、音色に揺らぎが生じます。つまり、このコントロールはモジュレーションの深さを調整するものです。・REVERB：このノブはエコーユニットのリピートコントロールのように動作します。ディレイラインのアウトプットをディレイラインのインプットへと送ります。オリジナルオイル缶エコーと同様にAdinekoのリピートにはモジュレーションが加わり、さらにローファイ化することでオリジナル同様のリピートサウンドを作ることができます。 ●デザイナーズノート私がCatalinbreadブランドを始める前から、オイル缶エコーユニットの魅力に取り憑かれていました。いつ頃のことか正確に覚えているわけではありませんが、初めて手に入れたオイル缶エコーはFender Dimension IV“Sound Expander”というモデルでした。フェンダーアンプのリバーブループに取り付けて使う外付けエコーユニットです。このユニットを実際に使うのは困難で、やたらと揺れる強力なリバーブを作るだけのものでした。そこで、私はDIYウェブサイトに助けを求めました。誰か覚えている人も居るかもしれませんね。そして、このユニットにリバーブとヴィブラートコントロールを取り付けることが出来ないかと思っていましたが、帰ってきた答えは全会一致で“そういうものだ”というものでした。そして、このユニットに使われているオイルは発がん性があり、今ではどこに行っても入手できないということも知りました。その後、私はAcoustic Reverberato、Tel-Ray Organ Tone、Tel-Ray Variable Delay、Gibson GA-4REなど様々なオイル缶ユニットを入手し、使えるエコーとヴィブラートを求め続けました。 2012年の夏、CatalinbreadではEcorecと共にオイル缶ユニットのサウンドを再現するペダルの開発にとりかかり、ついに本当に使うことの出来るヴィブラートとディレイを持った“ユニット”が完成したのです。オリジナルモデルを越えるディレイタイムやヘッドのバランスコントロールなど、オリジナルモデルの音色を再現し、オリジナルユニットを尊重しながら、さらに現代的に使えるものが出来上がりました。 -ニコラス・ハリス (Catalinbread主宰） Adinekoは9〜18VのセンターマイナスDCアダプターで駆動します。電池はお使いになれません。内部スイッチを切り替えることで、トゥルーバイパスとエフェクトOFF時にも残響を残すバッファードバイパスを選ぶことができます。
