日本代购-グロス ■ カリフォルニア初のパーカーポイント100点獲得生産者南北50kmに広がるナパ・ヴァレーのちょうど中央に位置するオークヴィルはナパ・ヴァレーで最も名高いA.V.Aの1つである。北部の暑さと南部からの冷たい海風が調和するこの地は高級カベルネの銘醸地であり、ロバート・モンダヴィやオーパス・ワン、ハーラン・エステートやスクリーミング・イーグルなどまさにナパ・カベルネのスーパースターたちが綺羅星のようにひしめきあっている。ナパ・カベルネの愛好家であったデニス&ジュディ・グロス夫妻が「人生を変える投資」としてここオークヴィルの中心部に畑を購入したのは1981年の事であった。その翌年、1982年にワイナリー「グロス」を設立。この地で素晴らしいワインが出来ると信じた彼らの予感が正しいことは瞬く間に証明される。ロバート・パーカーはグロスの1985年カベルネ・ソーヴィニヨン・リザーヴにカリフォルニアワイン初の100点を与えたのだ。それはワイナリー設立から僅か3年での大快挙であった。その後も快進撃は止まらない。ワイン・スペクテイター誌で毎年発表されるThe Top 100 Winesでは、1990年以降、フラッグシップであるリザーヴが6度に渡り選出(1990， 1994， 1995， 1996， 1998， 2000)、1996年ではRobert MondaviやSilver Oak， Shaferといった錚々たる顔ぶれを抑え、見事2位に輝いた。デニスはこの成功の秘訣を「畑の持つ素晴らしいテロワールと我々の惜しみない努力の賜物だ」と語る。 ■ エレガントなスタイルを実現する恵まれたテロワール彼の言う「畑のテロワールの優位性」とはその排水性の良さにある。オークヴィルの土壌は大きく、マヤカマス山脈のある西部(水はけのよい沖積土)、ヴァカ山脈のある東部(ミネラル豊富な火山性土壌)、2つの山脈に挟まれた重い土壌が大半を占める床谷部(より肥沃なローム土壌)の3つに分けられる。グロスの畑は床谷部に位置しているが、その中でも僅かなエリアにのみ排水性の良い石がちな土壌が存在する。近隣ワイナリーのBevan CellarsやTor Winesのオーナーをもってして「奇跡の区画」と言わしめるこの区画こそがグロス・リザーヴの畑なのだ。こうして、重いワインが出来がちな床谷部のエリアであっても、グロスのワインには熟度ある豊かな果実味と共に、良い意味での軽やかさやエレガンスが備わる。また、この恵まれたテロワールを最大限活かすため所有する67haの畑全てをサステイナブルな農法で管理し、2014年にはナパ・グリーン認証を取得。除草剤不使用、カバークロップを用い土壌の保水性を高めることで灌漑を抑えるなど、自然の力を引き出している。さらに畑にフクロウの巣箱、ワシやタカの止まり木を設置することで、畑に害を及ぼす可能性のあるホリネズミや害虫の防御を行っている。また、この恵まれたテロワールを最大限活かすため所有する67haの畑全てをサステイナブルな農法で管理し、2014年にはナパ・グリーン認証を取得。除草剤不使用、カバークロップを用い土壌の保水性を高めることで灌漑を抑えるなど、自然の力を引き出している。さらに畑にフクロウの巣箱、ワシやタカの止まり木を設置することで、畑に害を及ぼす可能性のあるホリネズミや害虫の防御を行っている。収穫・醸造においても最高品質のワインを造るための努力は惜しまない。ブドウ収穫は夜間に行い、カベルネでは畑、ワイナリー到着時、更に除梗後の3回にも及ぶ厳しい選果を行う。こうして最上のブドウのみが醸造へと進められることで、豊かでフルボディながら繊細さやフィネスのある長期熟成のポテンシャルを秘めた赤ワインが造られるのだ。白ワインではソーヴィニヨン、シャルドネともにマロラクティック発酵を行わないことで果実のフレッシュさが感じられる仕上がりとなる。 ■ 病害による低迷期、そして復活名声を築いたグロスであったが、その後暫く評価市場で姿を消してしまう。フラッグシップのリザーヴの畑が1990年代後半より病害に侵され始め、とうとう2000年には全面改植を余儀なくされたためだ。これを機に、ワイナリーでは区画ごとの土壌タイプを分析、それに合わせた台木とクローンを選択し、日当たりのよい仕立て方法に全面的に切り替えた。こうして2000年から2004年の間リザーヴは生産中止となり、それによるワイナリーの損失は500万ドル(約5億4千万円)にも及ぶという。それでもデニスは当時をこう振り返る。「その期間でも高品質のワインに”リザーヴ”というラベルを付けて販売することも出来たが、それはワイナリーが望んでいたものではなかった。この特別な区画に多大なる誇りを持っている我々にとって、区画に忠実であるために多少の犠牲を払っても構わないと覚悟していたんだ。」植替え後、樹齢を重ねたブドウ樹たちがテロワールの表現を出来るようになってきた近年、再度評価各誌にグロスの名前が戻ってきた。2015年に行われたグロスの垂直試飲会では、カリフォルニアワインの著名な評論家ジェームス・ローブ氏が、植替え後の2005年以降のヴィンテージに軒並み高スコアをつけ、「グロスのリザーヴはナパのエリートワインの驚異的な表現だ、と記した。2019年にはワイン・スペクテイター誌の「The Top 100 Wines」にて、シャトー・ド・ボーカステルやギガル、ペンフォールズといった錚々たるメンツを抑え第4位に輝き、まさに完全復活を世界に印象付けた。今改めて注目すべきナパ・カベルネの名作の1つである。　■ グロス　カベルネ・ソーヴィニヨン熟したプラムとレッドベリー、ブラックベリーがたっぷりと詰まったアロマ。ベリー主体の味わいをダークチョコレート、バニラ、クローヴやシナモンのヒントが彩っている。エレガントなストラクチャーにはしなやかなタンニンが溶け込んでおり、柔らかく包み込むようなフィニッシュへと続いていきます。
