This comes from the zone of Molinaseca in Ponferrada on slate soils with more Alicante Bouschet that delivers a darker profile, in color and aromatic palette, quite different from the other Ultreia range. It feels quite heady and ripe, with notes of prunes and bruised apples. The palate reveals abundant, slightly dusty tannins. It's a little too ripe for my taste. Some 9,000 bottles produced. Raúl Pérez has purchased 90% of the vineyards used for the La Vizcaína project, which gives him a lot more control over viticulture. They produce around 300,000 bottles, 60% of them Ultreia Saint Jacques. 2021 is a super clean and defined vintage, quite transparent for the soils and the places, with very fresh and balanced wines. Some of the Ultreia wines showed a little more oak and might need some more time in bottle. Published: Aug 11, 2023
